Peel Street Tamworth
Brian's Hot Picks for Tamworth 2010

  • Nominations for all the various awards are in - see various the web sites or magazines for further details. One to watch out for - Makalie Foodie.

  • Don't miss Alby Pool and his daughter Melody and the No City Limits Band at the Cattlemans. Fairly traditional and full-on honky tonk played boldly, you'll either love it or hate it. At Port Stephens back in June (2008), it was the "to die for" gig of that festival. Cattleman's Steak House, drive out past TREC and it's on your right.

  • Lonesome Train at the Fitzroy and the Locomotive, 10 shows. Good fun for the audience, three piece rockabilly band.

  • Tall Timbre mainly at the Fitzroy Tavern.

  • Who killed 'em dead at the Narooma Blues Festival on the October long weekend??? Chris Wilson. So look out for something called The Pirates of Beer. This is loud, heavy, grinding and uncompromising. A wonderful band, and Sarah Carroll is great too.

  • Travis List will be back again at Wests, I'll have to get used to staying up late. Travis is an Australian who lives in Nashville, sings with a twang you would not believe, and is just terrific. Great material, great delivery, great band, great to dance to, great guests in the wee small hours. And it wasn't packed last year, so be there. Midnight on Friday 15th and Tuesday 19th, and several earlier shows too on other days.

  • Shane Nicholson and Kasey Chambers have two concerts at Blazes, I think it's the 20th and the 22nd. You should book on-line if you want to get a good seat for this.

  • You may have read about this. The lovely old chap named Chicka, who always wore black and danced at many events every Tamworth, died during the year. His ashes will be scattered at Tamworth by his friends at 9am up at the lookout on the first Saturday morning. Please come along, everybody will be welcome; Tamworth is the people as well as the performers.

  • Sad to report, but the blues muso and Tamworth regular, Ray Hoff is very ill and will not be in Tamworth this January. However, to keep the tradition going, the Blues Bombers have a couple of gigs at the Imperial.

  • The Ezra Lee Band. The band's spectacular appearance at the Sydney Fifties Fair last August can be seen on youtube. Two gigs at the Albert.

  • Gleny Rae Virus and Her Tamworth Playboys. Miss Virus keeps the boys rigidly in line and well dressed in 1940's attire. This spectacle has been a daily fixture at the Southgate Inn in recent years. I gather there will only be two shows this year, so get started at 8pm at the Locomotive on the first Friday.

  • The Junes. This is a band making its first appearance in Tamworth. The band contains Gleny Rae and two of her special guests from previous years, so watch out. Monday to Saturday at 4pm at the Southgate.

  • Sandra Humphries at the Central. Not to be missed.

  • Anything where Brad Bergen is playing the drums. I know that sounds a bit weird, but trust me. People who hire him are the real deal.

  • Tomkins Guitar Showcase. In many ways this is the best gig of the festival. It goes for hours and hours but is never boring. This year it's three hours in Blazes.

  • Stewie's Pickers Night. This is the best guitar pickers night of the whole festival, but it's so jam-packed that you can hardly get in the door.

  • Bill Chambers Sessions. This has moved to a new timeslot of 4pm. Good band and interesting special guests. The word has leaked out that this is a top show and now you can't fit in the door, even after they doubled the amount of seating.

  • Northern Territory - Katherine Muster Fundraiser. This annual event has good acts and always a few surprises. $30, Sunday 17th at 7:30 at the Family.

  • Pioneering Ladies Concert. At the Town Hall, $30, Saturday 16th at 2pm. Heaps of acts and a top band including Australia's best dobro player and two members of Slim Dusty's Travelling Country Band.

  • Andy Baylor's Cajun Combo. Daily at noon at the Southgate. Impeccable musicianship and tunes you won't get anywhere else. Possibly some delightful dancing by Kevin and Isabel.

  • Lesley Avril at the Oxley Bowling Club. Over 16 years of Tamworths and still knocking them down. You can't go past song lyrics like "I want a cowvboy in my bed" and "There's a guy works down the chipshop swears he's Elvis."

  • Graham Rodger and his wife Deidre at the Community Centre. Nice bloke and a good songwriter. Nashville enthusiasts should stay right away, as this is Aussie music, with Aussie themes, pretty much in the spirit of Slim Dusty.

  • The Joelenes. Up from Melbourne, this band is worth a look, with several shows at The Albert.

  • For laid-back blues and retro-rock (or whatever) fans, don't miss Johnny Green's Blues Cowboys. Actually this suggestion is quite pointless, as everybody who likes this sort of music already knows about this band. Eight gigs, not just one as shown in the artists section of the official programme.

  • Bob Easter and Melissa Bajric recorded an amazing duo several years ago on Drover Records. The Oasis Hotel has them appearing in succession from 2pm to 4pm on Monday 18th so we could be lucky around 3pm. I'll be there.

  • Kaylah Anne with her band. The best career move for aspiring young singers is to get a band and get on the road. Several gigs at the Longyard. Many other young artists are following this path, and it's a trend worth watching, but beware of bands that are too rock-and-roll.

  • More Artists. Brad Holve from the Central Coast has a list of artists to see too. Last year he even suggested where to buy a good hamburger.
